Greenhouse Gas Intensity

Chemistry is essential to cleaner air. Our scientists are developing new energy sources, ranging from solar power to hydrogen technologies that promise to reduce or even eliminate harmful emissions. Products of chemistry, such as activated carbon filters, are already helping to trap pollutants before they are released into the atmosphere.

In an effort to track the business of chemistry’s contribution to greenhouse gas intensity, ACC members have voluntarily committed to track and publicly report these data. No other industry group requires it members to track and publicly reports their progress on greenhouse gas intensity.

  • Between 2005 and 2006, greenhouse gas intensity from Responsible Care companies, as normalized CO2 equivalents per pound of production, increased marginally, rising just 5%. Since 1992, ACC members have reduced their greenhouse gas intensity by more than 30%, a tremendous accomplishment for such an energy intensive industry.

Note: To assess the trends in ACC/RC members’ energy efficiency and CO2 emissions over time, ACC calculates the changes over successive two year periods, using as the sample the group of companies that responded in both years of any given two year period. The performance in successive two year periods is compounded to derive performance trends over the longer term.
