Process Safety

Calendar Year(s):   In 2008, the American Chemistry Council adopted the Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) definition of a lagging process safety incident. This definition uses a Severity Rating System that will help discern minor incidents from more severe incidents. Since this definitional change occurred in the middle of the year in 2008, ACC members were given the option of using the CCPS or the prior ACC definition for reporting process safety incidents occurring in 2008. Therefore, the data reported for the 2008 calendar year were not reported on a consistent definitional basis. To avoid confusion created by company to company comparisons of the 2008 data, we are presenting the 2005 - 2007 calendar year data here, which were reported on a consistent basis using the ACC process safety incident definitions during that time period.

Mandatory reporting by all ACC companies using the CCPS version of a lagging process safety incident will begin in the 2010 reporting cycle, which includes 2009 incident data. In 2010, after mandatory reporting using the CCPS definition is completed, company specific data will be updated and presented here.
